What is DTF printing?

DTF (Direct to Film) printing is a process where designs are printed onto a special film and transferred onto garments using heat and pressure. It allows for vibrant full-color prints with excellent durability on a wide variety of fabrics.

Do DTF transfers work on dark garments?

Yes! DTF transfers work great on both light and dark garments with vibrant color and opacity.

Are DTF transfers durable?

Yes. When applied correctly, DTF transfers are extremely durable and can withstand repeated washing without cracking or peeling.

Do DTF transfers feel like vinyl?

No. High-quality DTF transfers should feel soft and flexible when artwork is prepared correctly and printed properly.

Can I order just one transfer?

Yes. There are no minimums for most custom transfer orders.

You can print all the way up to 22” wide for however long you need to go!

What is a Gang Sheet?

A gang sheet is a sheet containing multiple designs, logos, or sizes arranged together to maximize space and reduce cost.

Can I start a clothing brand using DTF transfers?

Absolutely. DTF is one of the fastest and most affordable ways to launch apparel.

What file types do you accept?

Recommended file types:

  • PNG (preferred)
  • EPS
  • AI
  • PDF
  • SVG
What file type works best?

Transparent PNG files at 300 DPI, 4500px, usually provide the best results.

Do I need a transparent background?

Yes. Any background not removed from your artwork will print.

What resolution should my artwork be?

300 DPI at actual print size is highly recommended.

Will you check my artwork before printing?

Customers are responsible for ensuring artwork quality, transparency, sizing, and spelling.

Can you fix blurry artwork?

I can show you one way you can upscale your art in this video below:

Why do my colors look different in print?

Colors may vary slightly due to:

  • RGB vs CMYK conversion (We print RGBO)
  • Monitor calibration
  • Fabric color
  • Heat press settings
Is there a limit of colors I can use?

No! You can use as many colors as you need. The cost is only based on the surface of the artwork file.

Do neon colors print fluorescent?

Printed neon colors simulate neon tones but are not true fluorescent inks.

Can I upload Canva designs?

Yes, but export them as high-resolution transparent PNG files whenever possible.

Do I need to mirror my artwork?

No. JoesDTF prints transfers ready to press.

Can you build my gang sheet for me?

What gang sheet sizes do you offer?

 Common sizes include:

  • 22” wide gang sheets
  • Various custom lengths

How do I maximize space on my gang sheet?

Keep artwork tightly grouped and avoid unnecessary empty space. We have an Auto-Generation button that will maximize the gang sheet space.

Can I mix different designs on one gang sheet?

Absolutely. Customers can include multiple logos, graphics, and sizes on one sheet.

Can I include both adult and youth sizes on one sheet?

Yes.

Can I reorder previous gang sheets?

Yes. You can go back to previous gang sheets or transfers you uploaded in your account at JoesDTF

What is your turnaround time?

We ship SAME DAY when you place your order before 2pm(EST), Monday-Friday!

Where do you ship from?

We print and ship from Louisville, KY.

When does turnaround begin?

As soon as your order is submitted.

Do you ship internationally?

We ship in the US only.

Will I receive tracking information?

Yes. Tracking is emailed once orders ship.

Why hasn’t my tracking updated?

Carriers may take time to scan packages after label creation.

What happens if my package is lost?

My transfer arrived wrinkled. Is that normal?

Slight wrinkling during shipping is normal and typically disappears during pressing.

My transfer looks dull before pressing. Is that normal?

They may look dull because of the carrier sheet. Once they are applied you will see them pop.

What temperature should I press DTF transfers at?

Typical pressing instructions:

  • 290°F
  • FIRM pressure
  • 5 second pre-press, 5 second tack, and 10 second full application
Is the transfer hot peel or cold peel?

Specify your preferred process here. It can be a HOT peel. It can be a COLD peel.

How much pressure should I use?

FIRM and EVEN pressure is recommended for most applications.

Do I need parchment paper?

A cover sheet is recommended during the finishing press.

Should I do a second press?

Yes. A final press helps improve durability and finish.

Why is my transfer peeling?

Peeling can happen from:

  • Incorrect temperature
  • Insufficient pressure
  • Pressing too short
  • Uneven pressure
  • Moisture in garment
Can I use an iron?

A heat press is strongly recommended for best results.

Can I press onto nylon?

Some nylons work, but testing is recommended due to heat sensitivity.

I’ve never used DTF before. Is it hard?

Not at all. With a quality heat press and correct settings, beginners can achieve professional results quickly.

What heat press do you recommend?

There are so many decent heat presses out there! Depends on your budget and size you are looking for:

  • Clamshell presses
  • Swing-away presses
  • Auto presses
Can I layer DTF transfers?

Layering is generally not recommended.

Why does my shirt have a box mark after pressing?

This is usually caused by press pressure or moisture and often disappears after washing.

Why is steam coming from my garment?

Moisture in garments is normal during pressing.

What’s the difference between DTF and sublimation?

DTF works on cotton and dark garments, while sublimation works best on white polyester garments only.

What’s the difference between DTF and screen printing?

DTF is better for:

  • NO minimums
  • Full color (no limits on amount of colors used)
  • No setup fees
  • Fast customization

Screen printing is often better for very large bulk orders.

How should I wash DTF printed garments?

Recommended care:

  • Wash warm or cold
  • Turn garment inside out
  • Tumble dry low or medium
  • Avoid bleach or liquid fabric softener
How long should I wait before washing?

Wait 24 hours after pressing before first wash.

Can DTF transfers go in the dryer?

Yes, on low-medium heat settings.

Will DTF transfers crack?

Properly applied DTF transfers are highly resistant to cracking.
